ST. GEORGE'S HANOVER SQUARE

Welcome to the Parish Church of St George, Hanover Square, Mayfair, London W1

St. George's was built 1721-1724 to the designs of John James, as one of the Fifty Churches projected by Queen Anne's Act of 1711. The reredos is from the workshop of Grinling Gibbons and frames a 'Last Supper' painted by William Kent in 1724. The windows contain Flemish glass of the early 16th century from Antwerp. George Frederick Handel was a regular worshipper at St George's which is now home to the annual Handel Festival.

St. George's has a full time professional choir and a strong choral tradition. Details of all choral services are under Services & Music. For more information and pictures click on History link. Parking Update - 15th December, 2011

Westminster City Council's Proposed introduction of Monday to Saturday 6.30pm to Midnight and Sunday 1pm to 6pm Parking Charges

The High Court ruled yesterday that the proposed changes to parking charges that were due to be introduced by Westminster City Council on 9th January, 2012 be postponed until after a full hearing of the judicial review application is held next year. The claim is being expedited to be heard before the end of Hilary Term, which next year is 4th April, 2012. The council has today indicated that they will postpone the introduction to after the celebrations for H.M. The Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, although they still say they will proceed in September/October of next year, assuming they win at the full hearing of the judicial review before Easter. The implementation has been delayed, not abandoned.

St George's Church started the campaign against these charges back in June, and the campaign has evolved to include many more churches, businesses and supporters, including recently the support of the Evening Standard. A public relations firm has been involved for the past two months orchestrating the press coverage, and they seem to have been successful in raising the profile of the problems we are all aware of.

Please find attached the original statement of facts as submitted for the judicial review, and yesterday's notification of the Judge's decision. Both documents on Sunday Parking Link below. A new website to draw together all the strands of the campaign has now been set up
www.westending.org/
and this website has a new online petition on Westminster City Council's own site, to register concerns. The petition already has 3368 signatories, and the petition runs until the 14th January, 2012, just before Westminster Council are holding a debate on the parking issues. Please encourage as many members of your congregation who are concerned about this matter to go on line and sign up.

Thank you for all the support the churches have given this matter since our first open meeting held in St George's on the 7th July, 2011

With kind regards and best wishes for a joyful Christmas tide,

Michael Beckett, Church Warden.

Dame Judi Dench, Patron of the Restoration Fund said:

"I am pleased to be Patron of the Restoration fund and endorse its cause. St George's Church Hanover Square has served the people of West London for nearly three hundred years but is now in need of repair and renewal. St George's has given to the community in more ways than just spiritually. The annual Handel Festival has just completed its thirty-first season, and the Story of Christmas Appeal of which I am President, has raised over three million pounds for London charities over the past twenty-eight years. It is now time to give something back to St George's. Thank you for any support you may give to maintain this historic grade one listed Church to help it continue serving London for another three hundred years." --

Since 1725 St George's Hanover Square has offered and continues to do so now it has become the Parish Church of Mayfair, a range of services, largely traditional and based upon the Book of Common Prayer, but with occasional alternative expressions of Christian worship. We seek to be a Christian Community in the catholic tradition of the Church standing as a beacon of faith in the heart of Mayfair.

In an age when many are looking for a disciplined way of spirituality and a more reflective, meditative style of worship, St George's has much to offer. The congregation is welcoming, supportive and friendly. The church is open every week day for prayer, Monday to Friday between the hours of 8am and 4pm. St George's belongs to the Diocese of London within the Church of England, which is part of the Anglican Communion, in some countries known as the Episcopal Church.

We seek the witness of God revealed in Jesus Christ through word and deed, primarily through serving the needs of those locally and who visit the area. The church is open daily to visitors and clergy and are usually available to discuss matters of faith and pastoral concern.
